Yacana Outdoors is a professional mountaineering service based in Mexico City, built for international climbers who want professional operations, clear communication, and guides who make the right call when the conditions change. Our name comes from the Nahuatl word for guide. That's what we do — come find out what you're capable of.
Most guide services in Mexico operate entirely in Spanish, cater to local climbers, and run logistics built for Mexican clients. We built Yacana for the climber flying in from Denver, Toronto, or London — someone who expects professional operations and wants to know exactly what's happening next.
All planning, logistics, and communication run through our English-fluent operations team. Our field guides speak functional English for safety and logistics — weather calls, route information, technical instructions, conveyed clearly. For everything before and after your climb, you talk directly with us, in fluent English.
We know these mountains the way you only can from climbing them year-round: the routes that hold, the weather patterns, how to pace a group at altitude, what actually fuels a climber at 5,000 meters.
And we tell you all of it, in a language you understand — so on the mountain, you're never guessing what comes next.
If you're preparing for Denali, Rainier, or the Himalaya, Mexico's volcanoes are accessible, cost-effective altitude — real time above 4,000 and 5,000 meters.
Most of our climbers fly in from the US, Canada, the UK, and Europe to get that altitude with a team that runs the mountain like the professionals they'll climb with later. You bring the fitness and the goal; we bring the routes, the logistics, and the judgment that keeps a hard day safe.
Small groups — three climbers per guide, maximum. Professional-grade equipment. And safety over summits, every single time.
Ricardo and José Luis lead operations and client communication in fluent English. On the mountain, our field guides bring deep experience on Mexico's volcanoes and functional English for safety and logistics. Every guide holds Wilderness First Aid certification at minimum; several trained at Peru's mountaineering school.

Ricardo wasn't supposed to be a mountain guide. He was brewing beer in Chihuahua when the business stalled and he wanted to move to Mexico City. He loved the mountains, so he found work with a local guiding company, learned the routes, and earned his certifications.
That's where he met José Luis — a biologist who guides because he actually understands these ecosystems: terrain, weather, how altitude moves through people. They saw the same problem from the inside — excellent local guides who couldn't communicate with English-speaking climbers, and logistics built for Mexican clients that missed what international travelers needed.
In 2019 they started Yacana while still working corporate jobs. English-fluent operations. Professional equipment. Small groups. Field guides with functional English for safety. Built specifically for international climbers who want clear communication and competent guiding.
Ricardo went full-time in 2025. Together they've run 100+ expeditions at an ~80% summit rate — and they still climb these mountains year-round.
Mountains are indifferent. They don't care about your resume, your fitness, or why you came. They respond to one thing: preparation, respect, and good decisions.
Our job is to prepare you thoroughly, guide you competently, and make the right call when the conditions change. Yours is to show up fit, listen when something matters, and be honest about how you feel.
We're not here to push you past your limits. We're here to help you find out what they actually are.
"We had an amazing time with Cristino. He's the best, most experienced guide you could ask for. He goes above and beyond — a genuinely warm person. Super well-organised: transport, food, technical gear... everything arranged perfectly."
"The company was always very quick to respond to all my questions, and helped me with everything I needed. Our guide, Chris, was the best we could have wished for: knowledgeable, friendly, and funny. He knows lots about the history of Mexico."
