Yacana Outdoors is a professional mountaineering guide service based in Mexico City with full English support. Since 2019, we've guided over 100 expeditions on Mexico's highest peaks - Pico de Orizaba, Iztaccíhuatl, La Malinche, Nevado de Toluca, and Ajusco. We maintain an ~80% summit success rate. Our name comes from the Nahuatl word for "guide." That's what we do.

Most guide services in Mexico operate entirely in Spanish, cater primarily to local climbers, and use logistics that work for Mexican clients but miss the mark for international visitors. We built Yacana for international travelers who want professional operations, clear communication, and guides who understand what you expect from a mountaineering service.
All expedition planning, logistics, and client communication runs through our English-fluent operations team. Our field guides speak functional English for safety communication and logistics - they can clearly convey weather updates, route information, and technical instructions. For detailed planning, questions, or concerns before and after your climb, you communicate directly with us in fluent English.
We know these mountains intimately - the routes that work, the weather patterns, how to pace groups at altitude, which local contacts are reliable, what food actually fuels climbers at 5,000m. And we communicate all of this clearly in English, so you're never guessing what's happening next.
Built for International Climbers Training for Bigger Peaks
If you're preparing for Denali, Rainier, or Himalayan expeditions, Mexico's volcanoes offer accessible, cost-effective altitude training. We understand what international climbers expect from professional guiding - English-fluent planning and coordination, with functional English communication in the field. Most of our clients are international travelers from the US, Canada, UK, and Europe.
We maintain small group sizes (maximum 3 climbers per guide), use professional-grade equipment, and prioritize safety over summits every time.
José Luis and Ricardo lead operations and client communication in fluent English. Our field guide team brings deep experience on Mexican volcanoes, with functional English for safety and logistics communication on the mountain.
All guides hold Wilderness First Aid certifications at minimum, with several trained at Peru's mountaineering school. We've guided these mountains in all conditions, all seasons, and we know how to read weather, manage altitude issues, and make the calls that keep people safe.

Ricardo - Experience Lead

Jose Luis - Operations Lead

Aileen - Field Guide
Ricardo wasn't supposed to be a mountain guide. He was brewing beer in Chihuahua when the business stalled and he wanted to move to Mexico City. He loved the mountains, so he found work with a local guiding company, learned the routes, and earned his certifications.
That's where he met José Luis, a biologist who guides because he actually understands these ecosystems - terrain, weather patterns, how altitude affects people. They both saw the same problem: excellent local guides who couldn't communicate with English-speaking climbers, and logistics built for Mexican clients that missed what international travelers needed.
In 2019, they started Yacana while working corporate jobs. English-fluent operations. Professional equipment. Small groups. Field guides with functional English for safety. Built specifically for international travelers who want clear communication and competent guiding.
Ricardo went full-time in 2024. They've guided 100+ expeditions with an ~80% summit rate.
Mountains are indifferent. They don't care about your resume, your fitness level, or why you're here. They respond only to preparation, respect, and good decision-making.
Our job is to prepare you thoroughly, guide you competently, and make the right calls when conditions change. Your job is to show up fit, listen when we tell you something matters, and be honest about how you're feeling.
We believe in:
We're not here to push you beyond your limits. We're here to help you find out what those limits actually are.
"We had an amazing time with Cristino. He's the best, most experienced guide you could ask for. He goes above and beyond, just a genuinely warm person. Super well-organised: transport, food, technical gear... Everything is arranged perfectly."

"The company was always very quick to respond to all my questions, and helped me with everything I needed. Our guide, Chris, was the best we could have wished for: knowledgable, friendly, and funny. He knows lots about the history of Mexico."
