Tolantongo isn't about summits or altitude - it's about recovery, natural beauty, and recharging between climbs. Nestled in a remote canyon in Hidalgo state, this hidden oasis features turquoise thermal pools carved into limestone cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and natural hot springs. Hike the canyon trails, soak in warm mineral water, eat fresh local food. This is where you go after summiting Pico, or between Izta and your next big climb. Your legs need this.

Tolantongo is where you recover. After you've pushed through altitude on Malinche, after the midnight wake-up on Izta, after Pico has tested everything you've got - this is where your body repairs itself.

Tolantongo is a remote canyon in Hidalgo state featuring natural thermal pools, hot springs carved into limestone cliffs, grottos with waterfalls, and a turquoise river with warm mineral water. It's a recovery destination, not a climbing expedition.
No high fitness level required, but you need to be able to navigate stairs. The canyon has many staircases connecting different pool levels - some steep, some long. If you can handle multiple flights of stairs up and down throughout the day, you'll be fine.
The thermal pools range from 30-38°C (86-100°F) depending on which pool you're in. The water is naturally heated by geothermal activity and stays warm year-round.
Yes, as long as everyone can handle stairs. Tolantongo is perfect for climbers recovering from peaks, non-climbing partners, or anyone wanting to experience Mexico's natural hot springs. No mountaineering experience needed, but basic stair mobility is essential.
Year-round access, but October to May offers the most comfortable weather. Avoid June-September if possible as afternoon rain can occur. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends.
Round-trip transportation from Mexico City, English-speaking guide, entrance fees to Tolantongo, box lunch for the morning, and full lunch at the springs restaurant. All pools, grottos, and tunnels are included.
Yes. The 2-day option includes riverside hotel accommodation, dinner, breakfast, and more time at the springs. You'll see sunset and sunrise in the canyon. Contact us for 2-day pricing when you book.
The warm mineral water is therapeutic for sore muscles and the low altitude (1,200m) gives your body a break. However, consider the timing - it's 6+ hours total in the van (3.5 hours each way). This might be better scheduled at the end of your climbing trip rather than between back-to-back peaks. If you're doing multiple mountains, active rest days with light walking in Mexico City might serve you better between climbs.
Not a problem. Most thermal pools are shallow enough to stand, and you can control your depth. Life jackets are available if needed. This is soaking and relaxing, not swimming laps.
Tolantongo gets very crowded on weekends and holidays regardless of arrival time. For the best experience, we strongly recommend weekday trips when the pools are far less crowded and you can actually enjoy the thermal waters without fighting for space.
Yes, you can bring your own snacks and drinks if you want. Lunch is already included in your trip price, and there are on-site vendors for additional food and beverages.
Limited to no cell service in the canyon. Use this as a true disconnection day. WiFi may be available near the main facilities but is unreliable.
Full refunds are available for cancellations made more than 1 week before the trip start. No refunds are given for cancellations within 1 week of the trip.
"We had an amazing time with Cristino. He's the best, most experienced guide you could ask for. He goes above and beyond, just a genuinely warm person. Super well-organised: transport, food, technical gear... Everything is arranged perfectly."

"The company was always very quick to respond to all my questions, and helped me with everything I needed. Our guide, Chris, was the best we could have wished for: knowledgable, friendly, and funny. He knows lots about the history of Mexico."
